Louis Lomax

August 16, 1922- July 30, 1970

Born in Valdosta, Georgia in 1922, Louis Lomax was very educated. He graduated from Pain College in Augusta, GA in 1942. From there he received his Master’s at American University (1944) and Ph.D at Yale in 1947. He was a philosophy professor briefly at Georgia State College in Savannah. Later he worked as a newspaper reporter for Baltimore Afro-American and Chicago American until 1958.

In 1959, along with Mike Wallace, Louis Lomax interviews Malcolm X for a documentary on the Nation of Islam.. The Hate That Hate Produced. Lomax continued with his writing skills as a freelance magazine journalist and author of books such as The Reluctant African (1960), The Negro Revolt (1962) etc. From1964- 1968, Lomax hosted a Los Angeles TV show twice a week. He worked closely on reporting the Civil Right Movement, which resulted in the FBI keeping a close eye on him.

Rebecca Davis Lee Crumpler

1831- 1895

Born free around 1831 in Delaware, Crumpler was raised in Pennsylvania. In 1852, she lived in Charlestown, Mass. where she worked as a nurse for eight years. In 1860, she enrolled in the New England Female Medical College, which seemed unusual at the time because many medical schools did not admit African Americans. Even with that, Crumpler received her medical doctorate.

Crumpler continued to practice medicine in Boston. In 1865, she moved to Richmond, Virginia to minister to freed people through the Freedmen’s Bureau. She. Then, returned to Boston in 1869 and practiced medicine from her home on Beacon Hill. In 1883, she published a medical guide book, Book of Medical Disclosures, which primarily gave advice for women on health care for their families. Dr. Rebecca Davis Lee Crumpler passed away in 1895. Her story continues to live on for Dr. Saundra Maass- Robinson & Dr. Patricia Whitley founded the Rebecca Lee Society in 1989, an organization supporting and promoting black women physicians.

Black History Month: Day 22| Katoucha Niane

December 30, 1960- February 2, 2008

Daughter of the writer and historian Djibril Tamsir Niane, Khadija Niane (called Katoucha) was born in Conakry Guinea. In her adolescent years, Niane lived a hard life. She was raped by her uncle and became pregnant after having a forced marriage. From there, she fled to Paris with her daughter to escape. And that.. she did.

Niane became a model for Thierry Mugler. She continued on to become on the first top Black models with the likes of Christian Lacroix, Yves St. Laurent etc. In 1994, she presented her own clothing line at the Escape Cardin in Paris. In 2006, she went to Dakar and created the annual “Top Ebony model” contest which jumpstarts the career of young African models. In addition to those accomplishments, Niane started the KPLCE association… Katoucha association against circumcision to stop the horrible tradition of circumcising young females (as she endured at the age of nine) and looking after the victims. Unfortunately, Niane disappeared early February 2008. Her body was found later that month in the Seine in Paris.

November 11, 1983- Present

A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Irving grew up in inner-city Miami. At 15, he met a Jamaican Airline Pilot, Captain Gary Robinson, who motivated him to pursue a career in aviation. In 2005, he founded a non-profit organization in Miami called Experience Aviation (EA), Inc. The organization introduced adolescents to career opportunities in the Aviation field. The following year, he opened the EA Learning center that provided middle & high school students with a “Discover Aviation” after-school program that included career guidance. On June 27, 2007… Captain Barrington Irving was the youngest person and first black pilot to fly solo around the globe.

During his 97-day journey.. he flew 30,000 miles in a single engine aircraft in which he named Inspiration. That same summer, the EA center launched a 10-week program entitled Build & Soar, where 60 students constructed a Zenith XL Aircraft. Irving piloted the test flight of that aircraft in October 2008. Amongst his accomplishment, Irving was presented the Congressional Resolution to honor his work in the field as well as the Medallion of Excellence form the Florida State Senate in 2007.

George Carruthers

October 1, 1939- Present

From Cincinnati, Ohio, George Carruthers developed his own telescope by using cardboard tubing and mail-order lenses he bought with money from his delivery boy job at the age of 10. In 1957, Carruthers graduated from Englewood High School in Chicago, where they relocated after his father passed away. He entered the engineering program at the University of Illinois’ Champaign-Urbana Campus, receiving his bachelor’s degree in 1961. Continuing there, he received his masters’ in nuclear engineering in 1962 and PH.D. in aeronautical & astronautical engineering in 1964. Two years later, he served as a full-time research physicist at the NRL’s E.O. Hurlburt Center for Space Research.

On November 11, 1969, he was awarded a patent for his “Image Converter for Detecting Electromagnetic Radiation Especially in Short Wave Lengths”. Carruthers’ UV telescope/image converter provided the first proof of existence of molecular hydrogen in interstellar space during a rocket flight in 1970. His telescope was used on April 21, 1972, during the first lunar walk of the Apollo 16 mission, where he was awarded NASA’S Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal for his work on that project.

In 1991, George Carruthers went on to invent a camera that was used in the Space Shuttle Mission.

March 6, 1966- Present

Born in St.Andrew, ,Jamaica, Ashley & his family moved to Brooklyn, New York when he was 12. He graduated from College of the City of New York, representing the school intercollegiate team competition. In 1991, he was the coach of the Raging Rooks (Junior High 43) of Harlem, winners of the National J.H.S. Championship, and also the Dark Knights of Harlem, who were two time National Champions of 1994 and 1995 in the Junior Varsity Division. Under his direction, they continued on to win six more championships.

In 1999, he became the first black to attain the title of International Grandmaster of Chess. In 2003, Ashley was named Grandmaster of the Year by the U.S. Chess Federation.

Guion Bluford

Nov.22, 1942- Present

A native from Philly, Bluford attended Overbrook High School and graduated in 1960. In 1964, he received his bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Penn. State University. After, he attended flight school where he received his “wings” in 1966. Bluford was assigned to the 557^th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, where he flew 144 combat missions. 65 of those were over Vietnam. Once the missions in ‘Nam were complete, he returned to the U.S. serving as a flight instructor for 5 years at the Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas.

Later, Guion Bluford decided to return to school. He received a master’s degree in aerospace engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1974, followed by a doctorate of philosophy in aerospace engineering with a minor in laser physics from the Air Force Institute of Technology in 1978.

In the same year, he was informed that he was included in the 35 astronaut candidates selected out of over 10,000. He entered the astronaut program and became an astronaut in 1979. His first mission was STS-8 aboard the space shuttle challenger that launched from Kennedy Space Center on Aug. 30, 1983. Bluford was the first African-American astronaut in Space.

He continued pursuing his education career receiving a master’s in business administration from the University of Houston in 1987. In 1993, Bluford retired from NASA and the Air Force. Presently, he serves as vice president and general manager of the Science and Engineering Group, Aerospace Sector of Federal Data Corporation in Maryland.

Black History Month: Day 14| Dizzy Gillespie

October 21, 1917- January 6, 1993

John Birks Gillespie, better known as "Dizzy" for his comical antics on stage, was born in Cheraw, South Carolina. Dizzy began playing the trombone and trumpet at the age of 12. In 1932, he attended the Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina, but left in 1935 to be with his family in Philadelphia. He joined a band there and relocated to New York in 1937 becoming a member of Teddy Hill's big band. In 1939, he joined Cab Calloway's BIG BAND and went on tour. Gillespie eventually left the BIG BAND (1941) and went on to work with legendary musical talents such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald etc.

If you grew up in the 80s... You may remember him as the man with the big cheeks. Especially from this episode of Cosby lls... peep the 2:40 mark..

Norma Merrick Sklarek

April 15, 1926- February 6, 2012

A Harlem native, Norma attended Barnard College and Columbia University’s School of Architecture. There were only two women to graduate from the school in 1950… she was one of them. After graduating, getting a job seemed to be a difficult thing. Norma was turned down 19 times STRAIGHT for a job. However, there is always light. Norma Merrick Sklarek later became the first Black woman to become a licensed architect: in New York in 1954 and California in 1962.

She helped produced Terminal 1 at Los Angeles International airport, as well as, the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo. She, also, became the first elected fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1966. In 1985, Sklarek was named as a founder partner of Siegel-Skalrek-Diamond, , one of the largest women only architectural firms in the U.S. Unfortunately, Norma passed away just last Monday due to heart failure. Her designs will continue to live on..

Harry S. McAlpin

(birthdate unknown)

Harry S. McAlpin ws the first Black journalist admitted to a white house press conference. At the time, he was working for the National Negro Press Association and the Atlanta Daily Word. It has been reported that the head of the White House Press Correspondents Association said to McAlpin “ Harry, we’re not happy that you’re here, but we can’t stop you from going to these press conferences. However, if you don’t go to these press conferences, we will come out afterward and we will tell you everything that happened. You will have the exact same notes we do. You will find it possible to write the same stories that we do. And, if you don’t go, we will let you join the White House Press Correspondents Association.” {aaregistry}

McAlpin passed up on his offer and went to the press conference personally. At the end, he stopped by President Roosevelt’s desk to shake his hand. It was reported that Roosevelt responded..” Harry… I’m glad to have you here”.

Elizabeth Keckley

February 1818- May 1907

Born in Hillsborough, NC, inherited her sewing skills from her Mom who sewed for the Colonel’s family. Keckley’s skills eventually helped her earn freedom for both her and her son. It was then, she relocated to Baltimore, MD.

In Baltimore, Keckley started a school for young black girls to teach them proper sewing skills and etiquette. She became the personal dressmaker for Mary Todd Lincoln, President Lincoln’s wife, after she pleased Mrs. Lincoln on her Inaugural Ball Gown.

Spending a substantial amount of time with the Lincoln’s, Keckley decided to write a book: Behind the Scenes. It was about the life of Mrs. Lincoln and what took place in the White House during Lincoln’s presidency. Many considered the book to be VERY controversial and Mary’s eldest son had the book removed from publication. Elizabeth Keckley was , also, the president and founder of the first black Contraband Relief Association.

My 2012 Grammy Highlights| Wiz Khalifa BING commercial + Nicki Minaj performance

Last night’s grammy award show… yawn. It was sad because of the circumstances, but I think it would have been the same even without, unfortunately. I didn’t plan on watching the grammy’s this year, but I wanted to see Jennifer Hudson’s tribute to Whitney Houston (RIP). With that.. there were two highlights I found to be the most entertaining.

One was actually during the commercial break … where they aired Wiz Khalifa’s BING commercial. Crazy dope and inspiring. Humbleness always gets a plus in my book. Check it out:

Two.. was Nicki Minaj’s “Roman Holiday” performance

. I saw A LOT of ignorant comments on twitter about it being the “illuminati” and “ demonic” and all types of other foolishness. I figured because ppl didn’t understand what was going on. Nicki’s alter ego is Roman Zolanski. She describes this person as being completely outspoken and saying everything that nice Nicki doesn’t. Basically… not taking ANY shxt. After Roman’s Revenge was released on her last CD (where roman was actually introduced)… Nick’ said several times that she didn’t want to have to result to that. In other words.. not biting her tongue and just saying whatever the hell to ANY one who attacks her. She tried. BUT ppl kept throwing shade her way and more… so….. she decides her new cd will be designed around “Roman”.

Now.. with that being said.. the performance basically went from NICKI trying to confess to the Pope that “Roman” was set to come out and that she needed help. The “exorcism” scene shows it was too late and that Roman had already taken over. No more nice Nick. I could go more in detail but you get the point.

I thought it was terrifically CREATIVE and didn’t take offense to it. She went ALL out for this one. I mean let’s be real… If Lady Gaga can walk the red carpet with a raw MEAT dress on and have a performance where blood is dripping from her ribs and everything else… why can’t anyone else? She went all out for this and I thought this was the best performance of the night (although SEVERAL may disagree).

I, also, heard ppl say it was inappropriate to do that considering Whitney had passed the night before. I’m sure Nick and her crew had practiced and practiced as well as PLANNED this performance for weeks. Would you have had time to change a COMPLETE set up in less than 24 hours? Yea.. I thought so.

I haven’t been feeling Nick lately (I miss the 2008 nick)… buttttt…. I applaud her on this one. I thought she SLAYED. Check the footage below:

RIP Whitney Houston

I was completely devastated when I heard the news Saturday evening. I went to visit my mom and I must say.. I haven't seen her with that facial expression since Phyllis Hyman died. This one hurt.

We were all routing for her. Many fault Whitney and shine the negative, but we ALL fall short of the glory of God. The important thing was that... she never forgot who was important (God and her family).. and got back on track. It saddened me to think of what her daughter Bobbi Kristina is going through. I can't fathom the feeling. Her mom... and her ex-husband Bobby Brown, who just lost his dad not too long ago. Factors like that are what break my heart the most... aside from.. someone being gone forever.. *sigh.

They haven't released an autopsy report but many of course are speculating the worst (per her previous drug addiction). I pray that's not what happened, but I will say... I am happy she returned to the Lord and her roots with him before all of this happen. I'm at peace that HE called her home.

However... I won't post any tracks or footage of Whitney for this one. Close ones know I still listen to at least two songs from the Preacher's Wife sdtk. everyday... and adored several of her ballads. I can't handle either of them now. It's weird that I was in the mall earlier that day in the food court and they were playing "I wanna dance with somebody" on the screen. Who knew.. that hours later..the news would report she passed away.

Needless to say... not only was she a LEGEND and ICON in the music industry... but she touched a lot of people's lives.

She will be missed.

Virginia Hamilton

March 12, 1934 . February 19, 2002

Hamilton was raised in Yellow Springs, Ohio. This area has been the home to her mother’s side of the family since the late 1850s, where Virginia’s grandfather Levi Perry, was brought there as an infant on the Underground Railroad. As an adolescent, Hamilton graduated at the top of her high school class, where she received a full scholarship to Antioch College in Ohio. She transferred to Ohio State University and majored in literature & creative writing. It wasn’t too long after, that Virginia Hamilton relocated to New York City, pursuing her aspirations of being a published writer. Hamilton attended the New School for Social Research to study fiction writing.

While devoting her efforts to writing, she met poet Arnold Doff, whom she married in 1960. Virginia Hamilton has written and published 41 books in several genres from picture books to biographies. She has been deemed America’s MOST honored writer of books for children.

Roy Wilkins

August 30, 1901- September 8, 1981

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Roy Wilkins was raised by his aunt and uncle in St. Paul, Minnesota. He worked as a journalist for the Minnesota Daily and as an editor of the African-American newspaper, St. Paul Appeal.

In 1923, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a sociology degree. After graduating, he became the editor of the Kansas City Call. In 1929, he married social worker Aminda Badeau. Roy Wilkins was an active member of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People); in 1931- 1934.. he was the assistant NAACP secretary under Walter Francis White. When W.E.B. Dubois left in 1934, Wilkins replaced him as editor of Crisis, the NAACP official magazine.

In 1950, Wilkins, A. Philip Randolph, and Arnold Aronson found the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. LCCR has become the first civil rights coliaiton and coordinated the national legislative campaign on behalf of every major civil rights law since 1957. He continued with success in the following years: 1955- ames the executive secretary (title changed to executive director in 1964) of the NAACP and in 1967- awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Lyndon Johnson.

Akua Lezli Hope

Hope was born in Manhattan and raised in New York City. In her length of degrees she holds a Bachelors’ in Psychology from William College, a Masters’ in marketing from Columbia University Graduate School of Business, and a Master of Science in Jurisprudence in Broadcast Journalism from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

As a founding section leader in the Poetry Forum on Compuserve, she has won severa fellowships such as: Two Artist from the New York Foundation for the Arts, Ragdale United-States Africa, and Creative writing from the National Endowment for the Arts. You may find Akua Hope published in numerous amount of magazines and national anthologies including Dark Matter: Anthology of African American Science Fiction, The Blue Light corner, etc.

Matthew Gaines

August 4, 1980- June 11, 1900

Senator and Baptist Preacher, Matthew Gaines, was born on August 4, 1840 as a slave. He escaped to freedom twice, but each time he was caught and returned to slavery. It was there, in the Fredericksburg area, he remained until the end of the Civil War.

Later settling in Burton, where he established himself as a black leader (as minister and politician). During reconstruction, Matthew Gaines was elected as senator to represent the 16^th district in Texas legislature. He served in legislature from 1870- 1900.

As I mentioned in my previous post... I was out of web commission (non-mobile) for the past two days. Therefore, just like that one, this post will feature the two days missed along with today's...

Day 4| William "Wally" Amos, Jr.

July 1, 1936-Present

Born in Tallahassee, Florida. In 1948, his parents separated and Amos Jr. moved to NYC to live with his Aunt Della, who often baked homemade chocolate chip and pecan cookies. His desire for cooking continued as he attended the Food Trades Vocational High School, where he studied culinary arts for two years. After spending time in the Air Force for 4 years, Wally returned to NY in 1957. He worked in the stock room in Saks Fifth Avenue and the mail room at the William Morris agency.

After receiving many promotions, in 1962, he became the first black talent agent of the William Morris Agency, where he worked with the likes of the Simon & Garfunkel, Supremes, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye etc.. In 1967, Amos left the agency and moved to LA. Using a revised version of his Aunt Della’s recipe and financial support from singers like Marvin Gaye, the first Famous Amos store opened on Sunset Blvd in 1975. Within months, two more West coast franchises opened. Bloomingdale’s dept. store , also, began to sell the cookies.

Day 5| Charles Alston

1907-1977

Born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1907, art was an early interest for Charles Alston. Alston received an art award in grammar school and continued his involvement with art throughout high school. He graduated from Columbia University, where he studied art and art history. Upon receiving his undergrad degree.. he was awarded the Arthur Wesley Dow Fellowship, which enabled him to earn his Master’s Degree in Fine Arts at Columbia’s teachers college.

During the 1940s, Alston founded the “306 group”, a studio space reserved for prominent Black artists.. i.e. Langston Hughes, Augusta Savage etc. In 1950, the Arts Students League selected Charles Alston as their first African American instructor.

"As an artist . . . I am intensely interested in probing, exploring the problems of color, space and form, which challenge all contemporary painters. However, as a black American . . . I cannot but be sensitive and responsive in my painting to the injustice, the indignity, and the hypocrisy suffered by black citizens." – Charles Alston

Day 6| Romare Bearden

September 2, 1911- March 12, 1988

Born in Charlotte NC. Romare Bearden began college at Lincoln University. From there, he transferred to Boston University and completed his collegiate career at New York University, receiving a degree in Education. While attending NYU, Bearden took an extensive range of art courses and was a lead cartoonist for the monthly journal.. “The Medley”.. At Boston University, Bearden was the director of the student humor magazine titled “Beanpot”.

He attended the Art Students League in New York and later the Sobornne in Paris. In 1935, Romare Bearden became a weekly editorial cartoonist for the “Baltimore Afro-American”, which he continued doing until 1937.

Before becoming a distinguished artist… Bearden was, also, a talented baseball player. He was recruited by the Philadelphia Athletics on the under the circumstances that he would agree to pass as a “white”. He turned down the offer and instead, chose to work on his art.

Born in Montgomery County, MD around 1807, Henry Blair was the second black inventor to receive a patent. He received two patents. In 1834, for his seed planter and in 1836, for a cotton planter. At the time Blair received his patents, he was unable to write. Therefore, he signed his patents with an “X”. Henry Blair passed on in 1860.

april 11, 1899- April 19, 1975

From Montgomery, AL…. Research chemist, Percy Julian, synthesized the drug: Physostigimine, which is used to treat glaucoma. He, also, advanced a soya protein that became the basis of Aero-Foam, a foam fire extinguisher used by the U.S. Navy in World War II.

Attending De Pauw University, as well as Harvard University to achieve his master’s degree, Julian taught chemistry at Fisk University, West Virginia State College for Negroes, Howard, and De Pauw University. In 1936, his research was directed in soy beans at the Glidden Company in Chicago. It was there he became the director of Chemicals Development before leaving in 1953 to start his own companies.

His research resulted in the mass production of hormones which led to the production of birth control, as well as the synthesis of cortisone, steroids, and other products from soy beans. A member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. ~~(Skee-Roo~~), Percy Julian was one of the first African Americans to receive a PH.D. in Chemistry.

It was said that he was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical center, according to the coroner’s office, due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 75 years old.

Black History Month: Day 1| Camilla Williams

Today marks the first day of Black History Month! I’m always excited about this. It just really humbles and inspires my mood with how far we’ve come… all the things we’ve accomplished.. and all the things we’ve overcome. As oppose to last year where I named a moment in black history that reflected the day it was (i.e. February 1, 1863), I’m going a different route this year. This year.. I will spotlight someone different every day.

Camilla Williams, a Danville, VA native, was the first African-American woman to be under a contract with the New York Opera.. “Madame Butterfly” in 1946. In 1963, Williams sang the Star Spangled Banner at the White House right before Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. She continued her career as a professor of voice at Indiana University until 1997, when she retired. In 2007, The Library of Virginia honored Williams as one of the eight women to be included in the Virginia Women in History project. Sadly, CamillaWilliams just went on to be with the Lord last Sunday, January 29, at the tender age of 92 in Bloomington, Indiana.
