Born in Kansas City, MO on January 4, 1876, Alonzo "Lonnie" Clayton had a reputation for being 'exceptionally bright'. One of nine siblings, Clayton joined his brother Albertus, who was a Jockey for Elias J. "Lucky" Baldwin in Chicago, IL. After starting as an exercise rider, he debuted as a Jockey in 1890 in Clifton, NJ. He won the Jerome Stakes and Champagne Stakes in 1891. The following year, Alonzo "Lonnie" Clayton made history.
In 1892, he became the youngest Jockey at 15 years old to win the Kentucky Derby. A title he still holds to present day. He, also, won the Clark Stakes at Churchill Downs, Louisville, KY and the Travers Stakes in Saratoga, NY. By 1895, Clayton had 144 wins under his belt.
Alonzo "Lonnie" Clayton passed away at the young age of 41, however, his name will forever live on.
