The Live Version of the Song is ALWAYS Superior to the Original (Pt. 1)

Tony Krash/Badu World

Can you believe this draft has been sitting since 2022?  I was vibing the other week and had a light bulb reminder.  I never published it!  What better time than now?  Half of the U.S. is snowed in today.
Live versions are unique.  Typically filled with vivaciousness and exclusivity to that specific performance in all aspects.   It takes a special kind of everything to put a live song in the category of being considered better than the original/studio version.  That special thing where you prefer to hear the live version instead.  The common denominator is simply this.  It contains soul that the original just does not acquire.

For instance...

Marvin Gaye - Distant Lover
Could be the screams.. could be the horns... could be the yearning.  It's. just. there.

Jill Scott- I Need You
This version is filled with such raw intensity light years beyond the original.  Visceral reactions invoked.
I'm very handy...

Radiohead - Nude
It's just something about this version that's a little groovier.. a little crisper.

Whitney Houston- All The Man That I Need
This is the only version I acknowledge.  I touched on why in my 5 R&B Records that Could Have Been Gospel Songs post.

Mac Miller x The Internet- Objects in the Mirror
Fun fact. I went to this (Space Migration) tour.  Small venue.. $30-40. I think I paid 30 plus tax... to see Vince Staples, The Internet, Chance the Rapper, and Mac Miller.  Read that line up again.  For $30!  I had a ball.  From Syd's ooh ooh ooh harmony to Mac's octave up on you AND me during the second round.  The drums.  It's all perfect.
While this was not done in its entirety, the way Tay Walker throws his rendition of 'How Does It Feel' at the end.. very briefly but effective is *Chefs kiss.

Average White Band - Cloudy
My father played this version so much growing up, what original?  This was always the one.  I actually detail this specific memory way back in the Time Warp... 1977 : Cloudy | Average White Band
 2013 post.  Smooth crooning baby.

Lucky Daye- That's You
You know... there is a certain thing that the original has that THIS one doesn't have,
HOWEVER the octave drop and additional harmony freestyles here were a game changer.  Game changer to another level of an already flawless song.  He's actually like this with most of his live performances (ref : {Personal Post} PHOTOS/VIDEO: Lucky Daye "Algorithm" Tour | Washington D.C
ALL the feels..
.

Jay-Z- Izzo (H.O.V.A)
This version is so good, you're compelled to play the entire album.
No seriously, 99.9% chance that you do exactly that.

Erykah Badu- Other Side of the Game
Don't get me wrong, the studio version does its' thang.  Erykah just takes 'that thang' up an extra notch on the live version.

 This is just pt. 1.
More in the arsenal to come...

The covers are up next.
