Suburban Gardens- The First Black-Owned Amusement Park #BlackHistoryMonth

Archives Center, National Museum of American History

Circa 1921 by Howard D. Woodson/Architectural Engineer, John H. Paynter/Writer, Sherman H. Dudley/Theater Magnate, and other investors within the Black-owned Universal Development and Company- during legal segregation.

Located in the Washington D.C. Deanwood neighborhood (50th & Hayes St)... Suburban Gardens, the city's only amusement park, opened emcompassing seven to nine acres.  For 10 cents, the Black-owned and operated park offered a wide range of attractions such as the carousel, tilt- a-whirl, deep dipper roller coaster, skee-ball, miniature railway, ferris wheel, and swimming pool etc.  An immediate success from opening day!  The dance pavillion brought in the jazz likes of Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway.  The park expanded to 20 acres and held a two decade run before closing its doors in the 1940s.

When will people start gettin' together again?

Unity has always been a theme in our community.  More complicated now than ever.  What's Happening Brother?

The hometown live version was only right.

my favorite pic of my momma (R) and my auntie (L).

Guardi Guard did a phenomenal job with this editing.  I described this album in a previous post as being powerful.  This is a prime example of that feeling.

Just Blaze set to open ‘Ani Ramen’ eatery house in Jersey City, NJ

via the NY Times

The popular Japanese ramen noodle spot, located in Montclair NJ, is now opening its second location in Jersey City via legendary producer Just Blaze. After the opening, look forward to a said ‘Just Blaze Fridays’ to be in effect. Ani Ramen House formatted in a modern Izakaya style features BYOB. Yes, a restaurant house where you can bring your own booze! Although, boxing leftovers is not permitted, the restaurant has some pretty good reviews on the food.

A couple years ago, I visited a ‘fancy’ spot and that’s where I first saw Ramen on the menu…and for $10+. The first thing I uttered was… wait.. they have oodles and noodles on the menu? O_o they charging $10 for a $.20 pack of oodles and noodles just because they threw actual shrimp in it? I was mind boggled. Fast forward to present day. There are spots solely centered around Ramen all over. It’s become not only a popular eat, but a lucrative one. My curiosity got the best of me one day. I decided to go to a local spot and see what the hype was about. I ordered the ramen with shrimp, which came up close to 10 bucks. Survey says. It’s NOT oodles and noodles lol. (I believe that’s just a DC term so in other words.. the ramen noodle packs in the stores.) it’s actual hand crafted noodles.. ramen noodles. They gave me a huge portion which I appreciated for the price. However, even while eating it all… I'd rather stick with my $.20 pack.  I may try it again or plan to try and make my own at home and see if it'll  become more appealing to me that way  For more info on Ani Ramen, click here.

Just Blaze shares Unreleased Jay Electronica, Jay-Z, Jeezy, Drake etc. Music + the Fascinating stories behind Them

Yo Just. Feed Us.

Every single time Just digs in his crates, we get the unimaginable.  Not only with his sets, but the unreleased music with artists that just always seem to be fire.  He has his hands on sooooooooooo many Gems and keeps them in the vault... no matter how much we try to pry for more.  Can we say Song Cry part 2? How long have we been hoping he let's us get a listen once he mentioned he and Jay have recorded the entire track?  Yet we're still waiting and probably will be forever.
We often hope he let's us get a quick snippet of gems he 'mentions' but he just talks humbly and relaxed about it and keeps it moving.  That level of respect towards the artists and vice versa is admirable.

However, here and there, he creeps them out for our listening pleasures.  Not in its full capacity, but enough to get an oh my gawd reaction.  Particularly for this segment, he shares the following unreleased :: Jay Electronica's 'Exhibit G'.. in which he says 'I'm probably gonna get in so much trouble for playing this". An instrumental that was slated for Hov's BP3, Busta x MOP collab that's "never coming out", original instrumental of Drake x Rick Ross 'Lord Knows', instrumental slated for Jeezy, one for Slaughterhouse, and more more more.
The vibe out that seeps through the speakers is one of a kind.

Once you've gathered yourself, Just wraps his set up and off kicks story time.  Personal tales of specific instances/times with Ye, Hov, Recordings and more.  I'd be writing all day for this post.

Road to Perdition | Jay Electronica

The tale of a King
who wasn't on the roster...

This is one of those tracks I wish I could've been in the studio for the entire creation.  The finished product alone is atomic...   *continues to Hov studio head nod. Since the track leaked somehow, Electronica did a great justice on twitter and decided to release the official version to the internet waves.  While it may or may not be a possible feature on his 'upcoming' (detox) Act II:  Patent of Nobility, the fact that this dropped is enough comfort for me.  Listen to him RIP this symphonic production backdropped by random sample loops of Hov on 'Success' below::
"My destiny's to hit a grand slam when my number come..."

Draft Day | Drake

You should’ve followed all my moves
You won’t realize til after...

While I don't post much Drake for various reasons, I couldn't resist this Boi-1da produced Lauryn Hill sample loop. For this loosie, Drake "dedicates" the track to Texas A&M quarterback, Johnny Manziel, who is also a close friend of his. This is a nice cut... and if you listen closely, you'll catch the reason behind this artwork as well as a sneak diss in return to the Gawd's comment the other week. There's your hint. Listen to the track below::

We Made It (Remix) | Jay Electronica x Jay-Z

I'm God, G is the seventh letter made
So when my arms and feet shackled
I still get paid…

Without notice, this freestyled remix to Soulja Boy/Drake's "We Made It" dropped. Drake recently made a comment regarding Hov's frequent talk about art.. claiming it was 'corny' (oh the irony of HIM saying that). That comment didn't go ignored and Hov addresses it here without overshadowing the true essence of the song. Keep in mind this isn't a diss track, just an incredible record with two OG's.  Amazing in every way possible.
Press play NOW.
