Jada Imani M's "INFINITY & Beyond" closing ceremony allowed guests one last visit of her visual project showcasing Black beauty in the past, present, and future. There was a metaphoric (I'll dig into that later) hair salon set up surrounded by various portraits of Black women that exuded our different hairstyles and culture. The artist talk segment was so relatable and quite refreshing for that reason. Here's a recap through my lens....
I arrived just in time for the artist talk with Jada Imani M. She shared in great detail that it took her about a year to put this project together and that everything was very intentional. Growing up, her mother worked in a salon as a cosmetologist. We all agreed... the 'essence' of what it was like going to a hair salon is missing in today's world. The chats, the laughs... the community. It was just different.
Jada Imani M drew inspiration from various celebrities (i.e. Rihanna, Solange etc) as well as various hair magazines she read as a child... like Hype Hair, Black Hair etc. I have many of those issues to this day. She expressed that she believes the biggest influence for hairstyles is none other than... music. Her goal with this particular project was to showcase Black women as the Originators (Hello!) as we often see our styles incorporated in mainstream media and don't always get the credit we deserve.
Say that.
What a refreshing intimate talk this was. We all related to so many things.
The lovely artist... Jada Imani M.
