The Live Version of the Song is ALWAYS Superior to the Original (Pt. 2)- The Covers Edition

Back with Pt.2, the Covers edition.  There are some song covers that arguably surpass the original version.  Not to say that the song wasn't made for the original artist, but to note that the cover artists' rendition of it is incredible.  Everyone can't do it, but oh man when they do?  Special.

Jodeci- Lately
I'm so sorry to the Genius, Stevie Wonder, but what Jodeci did in this version cannot be undone.  Jokes aside from the classic Varnell Hill Martin episode, the cadence... rifts... ad-libs...and pacing.  It's THEE one by miles.  On another note, I heard the studio cover of this where they had a video for the FIRST time in 2026.  Repulsed.  This is the only I will acknowledge.

Donny Hathaway- Superwoman
Speaking of the Genius... let's talk about the Voice, Donny Hathaway.  I don't like to compare he and Stevie's version as they both hold their own in their respective right for different reasons.
The soul in this version will pull emotion out of you that you didn't know was there.

Cleo Sol- Pink + White
Frank Ocean's version can't be duplicated, however, Cleo delivered a beautiful acoustic version to an already beautiful song.  I would have loved to hear this cover for the entire song.

Beyoncé- Beautiful Ones
Hov had my girl going through it, smh.  When the camera zooms in during the bridge, not only can you see the pain in her visibly tearful eyes, but you can hear it in her raw belting.
She switches the pace in this video with a Sex on Fire x Kings of Leon cover to restore balance.  This is proof that if you're gonna sing a Prince song, you better SING IT.

Mariah Carey x Dru Hill
They slowed it down in their rendition, but again.. the bridge is where the magic happens.  They keep that magic going until the very end.

Vincint Cannady- Creep
One of my favorite songs on the planet.  It may be perhaps the most covered song on this list.  So let's start at the beginning.  I stumbled across this version on YouTube while looking for a specific live performance at one of Radiohead's concerts.  It's rare that they put it in the set list, so catching it is a gem.  Out of curiosity, I played it.  Nothing could have prepared me for how he smoked this song.  I'm almost sure I ran it back 20 times that night.

Fast forward.  I didn't think it could get any better and then... I find the full version on Apple Music.  Whew.
More polished.  Vincint singing his heart out.  10/10.

D'Angelo- Can't Hide Love
I've always loved this cover.  Earth Wind & Fire's original is supreme.  Do you know how good this version has to be to compete with that?  Press play.

Tell Me If You Still Care
While we're here, D'Angelo has another.  Listen to this smoothness of SOS band's jam.
My heart.

 Backyard Band- Still Ray
Mmhmm.  You knew it was coming.
It could possibly be that I'm from the area... or just have an ear... or BOTH.  That 'I'll walk you there.. each nI Ight' is outstanding.  There was a rumor that Saadiq said this is now Weensy's (BYB) song.
Idk if that is true, but I couldn't agree more.

A few in mind missing from Pt. 2.
Yea.... let's make a third installment..
