CONGRATULATIONS : Deshauna Barber of D.C. brings home the Miss USA crown

image via NYMag

Another win for the city… and black women. Born in Georgia, 26 year old Deshauna Barber moved frequently due to her father’s military career. The moving settled when Barber went to Virginia State University.. eventually moving to the District of Columbia. Holding a platform at the contest for PTSD treatment for soldiers returning from deployments and suicide prevention in the Armed Forces, it comes as no surprise that she mentioned her military experience in the U.S. Army in her Q & A.
In which I might add, she answered each question thrown at her confidently, articulately, and with grace. Currently an IT analyst at the U.S. Dept. of Commerce and logistics commander at Fort Meade, I am proud to call 2016 Miss DC- Deshauna Barber…. the winner and crowned 2016 Miss USA!
With all love… congrats!!

A Fresh Start :: Former Black Panther Elaine Brown's Oakland Farm creates jobs for Ex-Inmates

Enlisted Master Gardner, Kelly Carlisle and farm crew.
Last fall of 2015, Former Black Panther chair(wo)man, singer, writer, and continued Activist Elaine Brown transformed a withering vacant lot in West Oakland, California into an urban farm of purpose.  Not only does this particular farm business produce a variety of quality crops (tomatoes, peppers, kale, squash, corn, and others), but it serves as employment with decent pay for ex criminal offenders looking for a fresh start at life.

"I'm not in the farm business.  I'm in the business of creating opportunities for Black men and women who are poor and lack the education, skills, and resources to return to a community that is rapidly gentrifying without economic avenues for them in mind" (Brown).

Later down the line, Brown plans to add a juice bar, fitness center, grocery store, and tech design space along with affordable housing on the three-quarter acre property under her non-profit org, Oakland & the World Enterprises.  The vision is sustained.  However, there is still a need for funding to be raised to convert that vision into a reality.  The Picán Restaurant, an upscale Southern-influenced black owned (Michael LeBlanc) restaurant in the area, signed on as the farm's first culinary client contract.  In addition, the restaurant also hosted fundraisers and goodwill-building dinners once a month through the end of the last year.

Misty Copeland gets her own Mattel Barbie for the ‘Sheroes’ collection

History made Ballerina, Misty Copeland, has received her own Barbie doll for Mattel; donned in a similar costume to Copeland’s Firebird ballet role. The doll is featured in the Barbie ‘Sheroes’ platform created to honor female heroes who break boundaries. This line has other dolls modeled after famous women including Ava DuVernay, Emmy Rossum, Kristin Chehoweth, and Eva Chen. The dolls on the ‘Sheroes’ line will retail for $29.95. A collectors’ item for sure.

As a brand, we want to honor women, like Misty, who are inspiring the next generation of girls to live out their dreams. We know role play often leads to real 'play' in life and we're thrilled to celebrate Misty with her very own doll.”- Lisa McKnight, Barbie General Manager and Senior Vice President.

Hopeful :: A 2nd Chance for Women after Prison at "Together We Bake"

(L) Jenkya Gassnola, intern x Hanna Teklu, a graduate of the program and now currently a program assistant- via Morgan McCloy/NPR.
As many who know with or without a criminal record, once an individual is released from jail/prison, the search for employment is difficult and often rather discouraging considering it’s few and far employers who want to give criminal offenders (no matter the gender) a second chance. Offenders are quickly turned away once the record is mentioned or comes to light. Unfortunately, but understandably, you’re reverted back to criminal activity just to make ends meet; trapped. Bonnie Rice, who served a 5 year drug related prison sentence, did not want to revert back. The bakery was just the place to help her with that.

(L) Elizabeth Bennett, Director of Partnerships x Nikki Yates, Program participant- via Morgan McCloy/NPR.
‘Together We Bake’ offers that chance to women who have served time in prison or are currently on probation for their criminal charge. Located in Alexandria, VA, this bakery makes granola, cookies, and kale chips for eateries and Whole Food stores locally. ‘Together We Bake’ trains women in the baking field along while coaching/conditioning these ladies to stray far from their past criminal activities and develop new habits that will drive them to success. Within the program here, women offenders can receive training certificates, which can alleviate some of the stress of finding employment once the program ends. Optimistically, the culinary field offers many careers for these cases. I, personally, can vouch for someone (although they are male) who was released last year and is now making a successful living in culinary. It seems the food industry is, in a sense, is supportive of employing those with a criminal background. It’s reported that 89% of women in the program pass the Serv Safe exam and move forward.

Meet Marley Dias :: 11-year old who launched 1000 Black Girl Books #BlackHistoryMonth

Meet Marley Dias... 11-year old from New Jersey.
One day, Dias expressed in a sense  to her mother that she was tired of reading literature that rarely reflected black girls as the protagonist, but more popularly about white boys and dogs.  In return, her mother challenged her..  “What are you going to do about it?”

” ‘What are you going to do about it?’ [my mom] asked. And I told her I was going to start a book drive, and a specific book drive, where black girls are the main characters in the book and not background characters or minor characters.”

Marley started her #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign in which she hopes to collect 1000 books with black female lead characters.  Once all books collected, will send to childrens book drive in Jamaica.   #GirlPower.

Meet Andrea & Robin McBride :: The 1st Black sisters to launch their own Wine company

Andrea and Robin McBride have made headlines as they are noted as the first black sisters to own their own wine company. The duo launched Truvée (premium) Wines at The Manor (1327 Connecticut Avenue NW), here in Washington D.C. (Sidebar: This place has really stepped up since our last visit, I hope Shana is reading...) While the two share the same father, they did not know each other as they lived on opposite sides of the world- One in New Zealand and one in California. Under bittersweet circumstances, the sisters met in 1999 when their father passed. Andrea was 16 and Robin was 25. Sharing a common bond of both growing up around vineyards is what brings us to the start of their company today.

It all started really from growing up in the wine industry as two little brown girls and incubating these ideas that maybe one day we wanted to make wine and in all honesty, we probably wouldn’t have done it by ourselves if we hadn’t met. We felt that we were kind of powerful — the world had brought us together in a very serendipitous moment and we wanted to take it on. We want to do it.”

In 2010, they launched the first winery in the world certified for zero carbon emissions. They, rightfully, named it "McBride Sisters". Today in 2015, their first brand “Truvée” is launched- a twist for the French verb Trouver which means "to find".

Womens' Empowerment Wednesdays :: Meet Faatimah Knight- Student who raised $30,000 to help repair burned Black churches

With an effort to reach out to friends and acquaintances in attempts to raise money for recently burned Black churches (due to hate crimes), the response was more than expected. A little under $30,000 was raised. This money will be used to help restore the seven churches destroyed by fire after the Charleston, SC Church shooting and campaign of removing the Confederate flag.
Faatimah Knight’s operation initially was set days after the Fatal shooting of 9 people at the Charleston Emmanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church (June 17th). She and a few friends wanted to raise $500 to send flowers of condolences. Instead, they ended up raising $900.

“ALL houses of worship are sanctuaries, a place where all should feel safe, a place we can seek refuge when the world is too much to bear.”

While Ramadan is occurring with the Muslim faith at this moment, several Muslim organizations have responded to her campaign with donations as well as folks of other faiths. She expressed that Islam taught the need to protect the weak and vulnerable.. and mentioned while the black Christian communities of the South may not be weak, they were certainly vulnerable.
Faatimah Knight is currently a masters student at the Chicago Theological Seminary. While furthering her education, she managed to still take on the heavy task at this time of doing what is right for the Black community. The support from others was needed. The act of taking a stand was necessary. Faatimah… #ThankYou.

Women's Empowerment Wednesdays :: 99-Year-old Doreetha Daniels graduates from College

The Great Depression.  World War II.  The Civil Rights Movement.  The election of the first Black president.  etc.  Doreetha Daniels has seen it all.  Last week, she saw a new accomplishment.  Ms. Daniels graduated from College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita, CA, receiving an Associates degree in social sciences.  College of the Canyons released the following statement::

To those who may have wondered why Daniels would pursue such a goal so late in life, Daniels simply explained she had always lived life to the fullest, and achieved many things, but never completed her education.

How inspiring is this.  At 99, this young lady continued to follow her dream and saw it through til the end.  We are much younger and when constant adversity and obstacles come our way.. are ready to throw in the towel or change the scene.  Ms. Daniels had multiple strokes in between her efforts of achieving the degree since 2009 and continued to press forward.  Now her dream is complete.  She is a prime example of Pharrell's quote '... you can do it too.'
Hold your head high, Queens.  Don't give up.

Women's Empowerment Wednesdays :: Step by Step | Whitney Houston ... #BlackHistoryMonth

...This old road… is rough and ruined
So many dangers.. along the way
So many burdens.. might fall upon me
So many troubles… that I have to face

Oh, but I won’t let… my spirit fail me
Oh, I won’t let… my spirit go
Until I get to… my destination
I’m gonna take it slowly… cause I’m making it mine.

Step by Step
Day by Day
Mile by Mile
Go your own way…

Oftentimes, we lose patience when hardships come our way and want to throw in the towel. Focus your sight on the goal no matter how far away it seems. Humble yourself from the journey and be patient. Keep hope alive. Claim the prize!

Hope your beautiful soul is resting easy. You're missed.

Women's Empowerment Wednesdays :: Race Jones | V.Bozeman ...#BlackHistoryMonth

I'm black in your face
and I'm black when you turn your back...

...a work in progress
a work of art...

...I often imagine
My skin being lighter
And the sun shining brighter
My hair being longer
And somewhere I belong to
A house being bigger
And not being a NIGGER
!...

...then it gets in my eyes and I can’t see
And my friends love me so much
That they afraid to say that it ain’t me
But they let me fake it
Because they still need me to make it
Give them a piece of your mind
And not your heart
Because they’ll break it...

I’LL ACCEPT IT
FOREVER. AND. EVER.
I’LL BE… I’LL BE…
BLACKER THAN BLACK

The empowerment behind this song AND visual.
Bold. Powerful.
Embrace your heritage. Embrace your BLACKness. Be PROUD.

Side Commentary : Just thought I'd add a few fun facts. For those who watch the new show 'Empire', you may have noticed this is the same singer from the opening episode that chillingly belted out a heart felt tune. She is, also, one of Timbaland's (the music producer) artist. Cee-Lo Green wrote this track. He nailed it.. She EXECUTED it.

{Personal Post} Photos :: "Free Angela" Screening/Discussion | Washington, DC

”The victories we do win are not always the victories we fought for.
........But we should celebrate them, none the less” – Angela Davis

I've seen this film before. However, there was NO way I was going to miss Angela Davis speaking here. She is not only one of my most favorite people in the entire world, but my closest know how dear the place for her in my heart is. She is MY Doctor King. You better believe. The day someone sent me the info.. I rsvp'd within the next 10 minutes.

(L to R)
Shola Lynch {actress, filmaker}
Angela Y. Davis
Rhea L. Combs {curator of photography and film at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African American History and Culture, head of the museum's Center for African American Media Arts (CAAMA)

That entire day was hectic, but seemed to not matter any longer once I arrived at the church she was speaking at. The homie Withers was already seated waiting for me. I was excited... overly excited... but never expected the reaction I had. When I saw Angela Davis walk out, not only did I have the hugest smile from ear to ear... but strangely I wanted to cry. My eyes were super watery. I was that damn happy.
